INGREDIENTS:
- 200 grams of split peas that have soaked overnight in a bowl of water
- 1 tablespoon chopped coriander
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 green chilli , chopped
- 1 onion, chopped
- salt
- 1/2 liter of oil for frying
PREPARATION:
Drain the water then put the peas in a food blender and blend into a puree. Add a little water if necessary.
Put the dough in a bowl and add the cilantro , onion , chilli , cumin and a little salt and mix well again.
In a saucepan, heat the frying oil. Test if the oil is hot enough with a small piece of onion , and if it’s good, take two tablespoons and form balls with the preparation and cook them in oil until they are golden brown.
Once cooked put the gato pima on paper towels and enjoy either as gadjaks or sandwiched with the following recipe:
Bread with Gato Pima
It’s a very simple but very tasty snack, it’s usually made in mauritius for the lunch of schoolchildren or has a lunch when traveling :
- Grated Kraft Cheese
- Butter
- One baguette (French Bread)
Slice the bread in two, spread the butter, add some grated cheese and the hot gato pima and cover with some more cheese.
It’s done ! it’s even better if you wait a few seconds so the heat of the gato pima melt the cheese and the butter.
